the promised land

we did very little today. tomorrow will be a lot, so we took it easy today in preparation for that. the only thing we did was go to japanese costco. i wore my japanese costco hoodie and absolutely got stared at.

i think we perpetuated some stereotypes about americans and created some new ones today.

as one might expect, japanese costco is almost the same as american costco. it feels nearly identical. they even have “usda ground beef”, which i think is kinda fascinating.

japanese costco sushi absolutely crushes american costco sushi, though.

that’s a 50 piece sushi platter for ¥3980, or $25. i don’t recall what the sushi in american costco costs, but i bet its more than $0.50 per piece.

the main reason we went was the food court.

i would like to issue a formal apology to the country of japan, and perhaps to america as well, for the stereotypes we perpetuated here. i am confident there is like, at least one tweet out there with a photo of us at this food court saying “typical americans order way too much food and look like this”. i was dressed as john costco, and i definitely got a lot of stares. i dont speak great japanese, but i did hear a couple things. one guy said to his wife “look at this guy”. and in the food court, i heard the following conversation:

1 - “do you think those foreigners are american”

2 - (literally zero hesitation) “yes”

we ordered almost everything on the menu. i think we were so excited to be here trying it that we didn’t consider the logistics of what it would actually mean to order the volume of food we ordered. we got:

3 slices of pizza

2 bulgogi bakes

2 salmon poke rolls

2 vanilla ice creams

1 order of chicken sticks

1 strawberry smoothie

it was all pretty good. oddly enough, i think the star of the show was the strawberry smoothie. fruit is really hard to come by in japan, and it tends to be really expensive. the smoothie was excellent, 10/10 good. the salmon poke roll was probably the weakest offering.

thats really all i did today. i didnt even turn the camera on, all these were just phone pics.

tomorrow is the big day, and the blog post may be delayed due to the volume of photos i will have to go through.
